Getting in:

Students submit digital images of their artwork to be judged. The juror chooses the artwork for inclusion. This year, for the first time, the juror awarded prizes for the Best of Show.

The Juror:

Internationally exhibited sculptor and Chair of the CSUB Art Department, Joyce Kohl, was this year’s juror. She found it very challenging to choose just one artwork as Best of Show so this year there will be two.

Winners will be announced at the opening reception of the exhibit.

The Wiley and May Louise Jones Gallery is located in the foyer of the Byrd Library on the campus of Bakersfield College at 1801 Panorama Drive, Bakersfield, Ca. Please use the Haley Street entrance to campus. Parking fees are suspended on the evening of the opening reception. After that please follow campus protocol by parking in the visitor spaces.

Every year for the past nine years high school art teachers from around Kern County choose artwork made by their students to be exhibited in the Panorama Invitational at Bakersfield College’s Jones Gallery. The young artists see their work in a professional venue. They also see artwork their peers are making from other schools. Both these opportunities can have a huge impact on the subsequent work they produce as well as a sense of pride in the work they do.

The Jones Gallery at Bakersfield College is delighted to present an exhibition of art work by Kern County high school juniors and seniors. Schools represented this year are: Bakersfield, Centennial, Garces, Foothill, Highland, Frontier, North, Liberty, South, Tehachapi, Golden Valley, Independence, Mira Monte, Stockdale.

The Jones Gallery is located in the Byrd Library on the campus of Bakersfield College. Use the entrance to the college that is on Haley Street just south of Panorama Drive. The evening of the reception parking will be free. Other days please park in the visitor designated parking along the driveway.

Living and working together one would expect to see similarities in their work. And one does in the subtle use of color, the precise, elegant drawing, and attention to craft.  The work in this exhibit shows both their interest in ‘place’.

Amie’s large scale drawings on linen are elegant visual interpretations of impersonal seeming interiors. The drawings in this body of work were done on site in ‘agricultural facilities’ near where she was living at the time. According to Amie, ” The purpose of my work is not to find a definitive meaning, singular answer, or solution to the complex structure of institutional frameworks, but to raise awareness of spatial constructs within modern human society.”

Matthew’s work is about a connection with the landscape, were he is not just an observer but also a participant.  In 2008 Matthew made a pilgrimage from his parents’ street to the summit of the Black Kaweah in the Sierra Nevada range. Lithographs, large scale drawings, topographic.maps, notes record the journey documenting encounters with the place with people who inhabit the place.

Matthew says, “In an effort to demonstrate meaning within our connection to land, my work embodies physical aspects of landscape through personal narrative. This I believe enables us to develop a deep-lasting sense of place.”

In Tandem: Matthew Rangel, Amie Rangel opens September 13 and runs through October 4, 2012.

The opening reception is September 13, 2012, 5:30 – 7:00 pm. Parking during the opening reception  is free in the lot in front of the library.

This year 227 total artworks were submitted to be considered for inclusion in the show. An outside juror, Jesse Sugarmann, then chose 71 pieces for the exhibit. This exhibit showcases some of the best artwork done at Bakersfield College in the 2011-2012 academic year.

BC Art Student Exhibition opens April 12, 2012 and runs until May 3, 2012

The Jones Gallery is located in the Grace Van Dyke Bird Library on the campus of Bakersfield College at 1801 Panorama Drive, Bakersfield California. Take the Haley Street (1/2 block south of Panorama) entrance into the campus.

Here are a few examples of the type work you will see exhibited.

Mr. Zimmermann’s photographs of the Virginia landscape near his home are hauntingly beautiful. He  uses a large format view camera to capture images onto 8″x10″ film. The resulting photographs are contact prints made using traditional dark room techniques. Since no enlargements are made, the prints retain the same sharpness and clarity as the negatives.

Zimmermann says, “In these photographs of my home state of Virginia, I seek to portray landscape as being perpetually in flux…. The images I find compelling, are of places in the natural world that are in transition, sometimes even during the brief duration of the film’s exposure.”

Ms. Rogers, a native of France now living in Virginia, collects old postcards and photographs them combining the result into triptychs with her own photographs. She bleaches, and/or tones the three black and white photos until the contemporary images seem to be of the same era as the photos of the postcards. She states, “The ‘collage’ of an old postcard with my own images … brings out new visual relationships between these photographs from different times and places and implies an enigmatic narrative. Furthermore, these triptychs allow me to bridge the gap between past and present and forge a link with these earlier anonymous photographers.”

Ellen Soffer: “Interpretation is left to the individual viewer. My intention is that the paintings evoke feelings left behind by a dream, an emotion, or a memory without being limited to the specific details of the event itself.” Ms. Soffer holds an MFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago.

            
Dennis Sopczynski, “A swimming pool is a public space. Yet I see it as private, intimate, transformative, magical, and reflective. These drawings are about my “journey” through life, good, bad or indifferent.” Mr. Sopczynski holds an MFA in Visual Communication from California Institute of Arts.

Brett Anderson, “Satirical forces are at work in most of my pieces, and the entities most exposed by this scrutiny are myself those like me. Arguably, the dialogue that can be unraveled out of my work will best be understood by those with an unhealthy exposure to Saturday morning cartoons, suburban malls, and violent video games.” Mr. Anderson holds an MFA in Printmaking from University of South Dakota at Vermillion.

Dante is guided by Beatrice to Paradise

Wylie and May Louise Jones Gallery is very pleased to present a diverse exhibition of paintings and interactive objects representing fifteen years of work by Altadena artist Nancy Romero.

Paintings from the mid 1990s reflect her interest in traditional Mexican life. In her own words:

“The inspiration for my work is grounded in my background in Mythology and Anthropology. My first body of paintings sought to evoke village life in a small Zapotec pueblo in Oaxaca, Mexico, where I did extensive fieldwork in the mid sixties. My dissatisfaction with the impersonal tools of anthropological investigation led me to drop out of the program of study and later to try and recreate the beauty and struggle of village life through art. This was how I bridged two disciplines.”

Works from the first decade of the twenty first century show a shift of interest to broader themes. Again she says it best:  I began two paths of work, one about the intersection of Nature … and Man, and the other, about Man and Morality. The first has involved many studies of animals, crows figuring strongly in many works. The other, about the rigidity of morality, the different views of what is deemed “good” and “evil”.

This is a delightful, subtle, and provocative exhibition that has certainly left me musing.  Please make an effort to view this thought provoking exhibit.
