Mr. Zimmermann’s photographs of the Virginia landscape near his home are hauntingly beautiful. He  uses a large format view camera to capture images onto 8″x10″ film. The resulting photographs are contact prints made using traditional dark room techniques. Since no enlargements are made, the prints retain the same sharpness and clarity as the negatives.

Zimmermann says, “In these photographs of my home state of Virginia, I seek to portray landscape as being perpetually in flux…. The images I find compelling, are of places in the natural world that are in transition, sometimes even during the brief duration of the film’s exposure.”

Ms. Rogers, a native of France now living in Virginia, collects old postcards and photographs them combining the result into triptychs with her own photographs. She bleaches, and/or tones the three black and white photos until the contemporary images seem to be of the same era as the photos of the postcards. She states, “The ‘collage’ of an old postcard with my own images … brings out new visual relationships between these photographs from different times and places and implies an enigmatic narrative. Furthermore, these triptychs allow me to bridge the gap between past and present and forge a link with these earlier anonymous photographers.”

Ellen Soffer: “Interpretation is left to the individual viewer. My intention is that the paintings evoke feelings left behind by a dream, an emotion, or a memory without being limited to the specific details of the event itself.” Ms. Soffer holds an MFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago.

            
Dennis Sopczynski, “A swimming pool is a public space. Yet I see it as private, intimate, transformative, magical, and reflective. These drawings are about my “journey” through life, good, bad or indifferent.” Mr. Sopczynski holds an MFA in Visual Communication from California Institute of Arts.

Brett Anderson, “Satirical forces are at work in most of my pieces, and the entities most exposed by this scrutiny are myself those like me. Arguably, the dialogue that can be unraveled out of my work will best be understood by those with an unhealthy exposure to Saturday morning cartoons, suburban malls, and violent video games.” Mr. Anderson holds an MFA in Printmaking from University of South Dakota at Vermillion.

Dante is guided by Beatrice to Paradise

Wylie and May Louise Jones Gallery is very pleased to present a diverse exhibition of paintings and interactive objects representing fifteen years of work by Altadena artist Nancy Romero.

Paintings from the mid 1990s reflect her interest in traditional Mexican life. In her own words:

“The inspiration for my work is grounded in my background in Mythology and Anthropology. My first body of paintings sought to evoke village life in a small Zapotec pueblo in Oaxaca, Mexico, where I did extensive fieldwork in the mid sixties. My dissatisfaction with the impersonal tools of anthropological investigation led me to drop out of the program of study and later to try and recreate the beauty and struggle of village life through art. This was how I bridged two disciplines.”

Works from the first decade of the twenty first century show a shift of interest to broader themes. Again she says it best:  I began two paths of work, one about the intersection of Nature … and Man, and the other, about Man and Morality. The first has involved many studies of animals, crows figuring strongly in many works. The other, about the rigidity of morality, the different views of what is deemed “good” and “evil”.

This is a delightful, subtle, and provocative exhibition that has certainly left me musing.  Please make an effort to view this thought provoking exhibit.

Intelligent Design

Frederick (Skip) Coon born in Ipsilanti Michigan in 1928, graduated from Cass Techincal Arts High School in 1946. He then served in Korea in the United States Army.

Fred attended Art School and worked for Ford in Research and Development at Greenfield Village, Detroit Michigan.

He completed a M.F.A. in 1965 at University of Michigan.

In 1965 he began teaching at Bakersfield College and completed a M.A. degree in counseling in 1968-70 at U.C.L.A. Fred continued to teach at Bakersfield College until 1993.

Fred’s early paintings and prints of stained glass windows and religious figures explored his relationship to religion and spirituality. At this time Fred and his family toured Western Europe extensively and visited the great European museums and cathedrals.

In the late 1970s and 1980s Fred and his wife JoAnn began to visit the American Southwest and particularly Taos and Chaco Canyon.

Fred began to explore the spiritual and mystical qualities of these sacred places. And then in the early 1990s Fred began to research and search for meaning in Buddhist thought and imagery.

Fred continued to make paintings into the last years of his life, seldom showing his work in public but sharing his investigations with his family. He passed away in 2007.

This is the first time many of these works have been shown to the public.

The Jones Gallery is please to present the 2010 Bakersfield College Art Student Exhibit. The judge for this year’s exhibition is Ramone Muños, Professor of Art at Art Center College of Design in Pasadena. Two-Dimensional work:
Your work must be framed. The only exception is painting that has a “gallery wrap”. If you don’t know what that is ask your instructor.
If your work is on paper then it is framed and under glass (or plexiglas).
Frames:
They can be rather expensive so look around your house to see if you already have one you can use or check garage sales.
Then make sure the frame is painted black or wood tone or silver metal – nice and neutral.
Matting or Mounting:
Aside from making a your presentation professional looking the reason drawings and paintings on paper are matted and framed is to keep the glass from touching the artwork. So, you may want to get a matt for you work before choosing a frame. Aarron Brothers has a good selection of standard sized matts.

Color:
Whether mounting or matting your work before framing choose neutral colors (black, white, gray) for the board. You want people to see the work, not be distracted by your cool orange matt.

Hanging hardware:
All work that is to be hanged must have a wire attached to the back. You can buy D-rings and wire at Lowe’s or Home Depot in the hardware area. (Please see the photos) Hanging hardware is not terribly expensive.

Want some help?

If you lack the tools to attach the hardware to the back or just want someone to make sure you are doing it right bring your art piece and the hardware to FA 20 Friday, March 19 between 9 and 11 am. and faculty will help you with it.

Going it alone:
If you want to attach the hardware to the piece on your own then pay attention to the following:
Attach the D-rings to the side frames 1/3 of the way down from the top – BE PRECISE!!! an 1/8th of an inch difference is HUGE when you are trying to make sure the piece hangs level.
