“Grand Traditions” Series
Artist Statement:
My current series, “Grand Traditions,” employs the aesthetic elements and iconographies of ritual and celebration as a way to comment on a variety issues such as: The migration and/or fusion of identity across cultural barriers; the intersection between commerce and ideology; and the increasingly high level of universal participation in a shrinking global community.
The work is an going investigation of external events that masquerade and transform the visual and social experience into a psychological charge in expectation…An amplified state of mind. The painting documents the connection we share as citizens, consumers and believers.
Jon Nguyen immigrated from Vietnam in 1979 and is currently living in Long Beach, California. He worked as an art director and graphic designer for over 20 years and has been exhibiting his painting since 1995. He is currently teaching full-time at Art Center College of Design in Pasadena and is a member of LA Artcore, a non-profit art organization. His mixed media work has primarily focused on the observation of external events
and conditions.
